In My Solitude
The Artist.
Based in Accra, Ghana, Rechel Rodham Oppong is a self-taught artist specialising in portrait painting. Her journey began in 2017, inspired by artists such as Frida Kahlo, and took her to Belgorod, Russia where she studied Art Design.
She returned to Ghana to continue pursuing her passion, exhibiting her work with Contemporary Emerge and at Gynadu Place in Accra.
In 2022, she started a new series called In My Solitude, exploring the positive impact that comes from being alone.
With her art, Rechel explores the depths of human expression and emotion. She’s drawn to shapes and lines, seamlessly incorporating them into her paintings to create stunning and emotionally evocative pieces. Her goal? To create artwork that forges a deep emotional connection with the audience.
Rechel’s exhibition is our 10th Thursday Lates, and we’re honoured to mark the occasion with her.
The Art.
You can live in the busiest city in the world and still feel alone.
Loneliness creeps up on you.
It persists.
Exists,
in crowded rooms, clubs and churches…
It walks beside you in busy streets.
And waits for you at home.
It makes you question everything.
But solitude can be a comfort.
A choice.
It’s much-needed silence.
It’s an open door no one will walk through.
It’s talking with yourself.
Dancing with yourself.
Recharging, reducing, relaxing, and reflecting.
In this exhibition, Rechel invites you to explore the positive impact that comes from being alone. Solitude manifests itself in different ways for different people. You’ll see it in their eyes, their smile, or lack thereof. The way they walk into rooms and out of them.
With these portraits, she shares solitude at different stages. It’s confidence, defiance, determination, fear, discomfort, indifference and contentment. Then asks you to question, what solitude looks like on you

exhibition set up
The exhibition set-up is a collaboration between production designer JoJo Temmeng and Trybe.
As you enter the space, you’ll be greeted by six private cubicles, so you can experience Rechel’s work in solitude. We’ll also have a meditation area where you’ll be able to relax, reflect and recharge.
This design choice was inspired by the artist’s desire to allow the audience to explore the positives that come with being alone.
