Trybe’s Open Call for Thursday Lates

Are you a visual artist based in Ghana?

Trybe are looking for creatives to exhibit at Thursday Lates.

Thursday Lates is a series of art exhibitions in Accra. The event is a collaboration between Trybe a platform for creatives, and Kukun a cafe and co-working space.

Our aim is to highlight the work of new and emerging artists and provide them with an opportunity to sell and network with other creatives and art lovers.

*This open call is only for creatives based in or able to be in Ghana.*

For Photographers

We are looking for:

  • Emerging photographers ( see FAQ at end of page for a definition)
  • Photographers with little or no exhibition experience
  • Photographers interested in a solo exhibition
  • Photographers interested in selling their work
  • Photographers with hi-resolution images (300 resolution minimum)
  • Storytellers using photography to share narratives

Types of photography we want to see:

  • Conceptual photography
  • Landscape and architectural  photography
  • Drone photography
  • Still life photography
  • Street photography
  • Wildlife and nature photography
  • Collage photography

What we are NOT looking for:

  • Event & wedding photography
  • Modelling photography
  • Food photography
  • Nude photography

For Artists

We are looking for:

  • Emerging artists ( see FAQ at end of page for a definition)
  • Artists with little or no exhibition experience
  • Artists interested in a solo exhibition
  • Artists interested in selling their work
  • Artists with some examples of their work they can show us
  • Artists who are currently active
  • Storytellers using art to share narratives

  • Mediums such as oil, acrylic, watercolour, pastel, ink, pencil sketch, charcoal
  • Mixed media
  • Abstract art
  • Conceptual and allegory art
  • Portraits 
  • Surrealism and photorealism
  • Collage art

HOW TO APPLY

  • Send us examples of your work. This can be a portfolio or website.
  • Share your full name and location
  • Send the above to opencall@trybeafrica.com
  • Use the subject line “open call-photographer” OR “open call-artist” depending on what are you.

FAQ

Thursday Lates happens every two-three months, on a Thursday.

Emerging can mean a lot of things, we’ve added some bullet points to guide you. We aren’t looking for complete beginners, you must have some experience with your creative skill.

  • You have less than 6 years of professional experience in your chosen artistic field.
  • You haven’t created a large body of work or exhibited at any or many galleries.
  • You might still be in art school or have recently graduated.
  • You don’t have any or much recognition from the art world.
  • You might not have any representation or anyone managing you.
  • You haven’t sold your work before OR you haven’t sold much work.
  • You have recently moved into this artistic field from another one.
  • You’re still developing your style.

If you are a photographer, you will have to send hi-res images to us so we can print them. If you are an artist, you will either send us work you have already created OR we will provide you with material to create new work to add to existing work. You will have to sign a contract with us to protect you as a creative, promote the event and attend the exhibition on the day..

Your work will be exhibited at Kukun in Osu. All exhibited work is for sale, so anyone who attends can purchase your work. You can see videos of past events here and here.

All the work you exhibit is for sale on the day of the event and online.

 

Yes, Trybe and Kukun take a 30% commission of total sales. The artist takes 70% of all sales.

 

No, Trybe and Kukun will cover costs to exhibit. More details will be provided if you are selected to exhibit.

 

Yes, you will retain all rights to your work.

 

African visual artists living in or based in Ghana over the age of 18.

 

You will receive an email of acknowledgement and we will get back to you if you have moved on to the next stage. If you are selected, you will have a call with a member of the Trybe team to talk more about the opportunity. Due to the number of applications we get, we won’t be able to provide feedback if you are not selected on this occasion. However, we do keep your details on file for future exhibitions.

We will choose based on your skill and the work you share with us.
