About this opportunity
The Miles Morland Foundation Writing Scholarship offers a rare opportunity for emerging African writers to focus solely on their craft. The scholarship supports writers of fiction or non-fiction who were born in Africa or have both parents born in Africa. Its goal is to enable writers to produce the first draft of a full-length book in English.
Writers will receive a grant of £18,000, paid over 12 months. Non-fiction writers needing additional research time may be considered for an 18-month period. Scholars must submit 10,000 new words monthly and are encouraged to donate 20% of future income from the supported book back to the foundation — as a “debt of honour” to fund future writers.
Shortlisted applicants will be asked to submit a 3,000–4,000 word sample chapter of their proposed work.
