About this opportunity

The Miles Morland Foundation is awarding writers with a £18k scholarship. The purpose of the Morland Writing Scholarships is to allow each scholar the time to produce the first draft of a completed book. The scholarship is intended to enable you to write a completely new work, not to finish a work in progress. A “new work” is one which you have not yet begun writing, and it must be fiction or non-fiction prose ( not short stories or poems.) To qualify for the Scholarship, candidates must submit an excerpt from a published, 2,000-5,000 word English work, along with clear evidence of publication and sale. Please also provide a writeup in 200 – 300 words about yourself and your background.

Scholars writing fiction will receive a grant of £18,000, paid monthly over the course of twelve months

    • The Scholarships are open to anyone writing in the English language who was born in Africa, or both of whose parents were born in Africa.
    • The Scholarships are meant for full length works of adult fiction or non-fiction. Poetry, plays, film scripts, children’s books, and short story collections do not qualify.
    • The proposal should be for a completely new work, not a work in progress, and must be in English.
    • To qualify for the Scholarship a candidate must submit an excerpt from a piece of work of between 2,000 to 5,000 words, written in English that has been published and offered for sale, you must send clear evidence that the piece you upload as part of your application has been both published and offered for sale.
