About this opportunity

The 2024 Prize supports emerging writers all over the world in both Fiction and Creative Nonfiction. The First Pages Prize invites you to enter your first five pages (1250 words) of a longer work of fiction or creative nonfiction. The contest judges based on the first few pages of a longer work of fiction or creative nonfiction, aiming to help up-and-coming writers finish their manuscripts with the prize package and to identify signs of a bigger story.

Regular Submission deadline is April 10th Extended deadline is April 24th.

Rewards

The top three winners in each category of Fiction and Creative Nonfiction receive:

• A cash award (1st – $2,000, 2nd – $1,500, 3rd – $1000)
•  A Developmental Mentorship that will include virtual meetings to discuss your work, review of select pieces of your work and potentially a written report from the mentor. Each mentor/mentee experience will reflect the needs of the winning writer. 
• Consultation with an agent via Zoom.

Eligibility

• The competition is for writers who are not currently represented by a literary agent.
• Eligible writers from anywhere in the world may enter.
• Entrants must be individuals (not a company or organization) and submission must be the entrant’s original work.
• Entrants must be over 18 years of age at the time of entering their work.
• Your full name must not appear on your document (do check your header and footer) to ensure judging anonymity.
• It should be the first pages (1250 words maximum) of your entire manuscript.
• You must create a  submittable account on their page to apply.

Entry Fee

• US $20 per entry for regular deadline (10/04/2024).
• US $35 per entry for the extended deadline (29/04/2024).
