About this opportunity
CTM Festival, in collaboration with Deutschlandfunk Kultur and ORF Austrian Broadcasting Service, is seeking artists to create experimental sound works for the new In Listening project. The open call supports works grounded in experimental sound practices and audio art, exploring the boundaries between sound, noise, music, storytelling, poetry, documentation, and listening processes.
Selected artists will develop works responding to the CTM 2027 theme “Process…ing”, with a focus on active listening as an individual or collective experience. Proposed works should be adaptable for two formats: a live performance at CTM 2027 Festival in Berlin and a radio broadcast for Deutschlandfunk Kultur and ORF.
The programme supports sound-led works where audio is the primary medium. Proposals involving complex video elements or extensive scenography are outside the scope of this call.
Rewards
- €6,000 commission fee for each of the two selected works
- Premiere performance at CTM 2027 Festival in Berlin (22–31 January 2027)
- Broadcast as a 40–55 minute radio piece on Deutschlandfunk Kultur’s Klangkunst programme in Spring 2027
- Presentation through ORF platforms, including Ö1 Zeit-Ton, Ö1 Blaue Stunde (Kunstradio), and/or ORF musikprotokoll im steirischen herbst festival in Graz
- Online streaming availability through Deutschlandfunk and ORF websites and apps for at least one year
- Travel expenses to Berlin and accommodation during the production/festival period covered by CTM
- Technical and staging costs covered by CTM and potential ORF presentations (upon agreement)
- Support, counselling, and production assistance from CTM Festival and partner organisations
Eligibility
- Open to artists worldwide
- Applicants should work with experimental sound practices, audio art, or sound-focused experiences
- Proposed works must use sound as the main medium
- Works may include text, music, spoken word, or lyrics, but sound should remain central
- Projects should respond to the CTM 2027 theme “Process…ing”
- Proposals should consider both live festival presentation and radio broadcast formats
- Collaborative projects are welcome, but should consider a modest travel budget
