About this opportunity
The Republic’s Black Atlantic Editorial Fellowship is a six-month remote programme supporting five fellows across Africa—West, East, Southern, North, and Central regions. The fellowship is focused on curating and producing stories rooted in Blackness and the African experience. Fellows will receive editorial mentorship and a stipend while developing and leading regional editorial projects.
Fellows will each choose a theme aligned with The Republic’s editorial focus (e.g., Art x Culture, Science x Technology, Politics x Security), and over the course of six months, will:
- Commission two original essays per month
- Write one original story per month
- Host one public engagement event in their region
The fellowship culminates in a digital symposium and aims to strengthen a pan-African editorial network.

Eligibility
- Must be based in Africa
- At least three years of professional experience in writing, editing, journalism, or storytelling
- Reliable internet access
- Able to commit to a six-month remote fellowship
- Must submit a 3-page editorial proposal, a CV, a 500-word statement of interest, 2 writing samples, and contact details for 2 referees
