About this opportunity
The Goethe-Institut, in collaboration with the documenta archiv in Kassel, offers two research fellowships for young international academics, artists, and curators engaged in scholarly, artistic, or curatorial research related to documenta and modern and contemporary art.
The fellowship supports in-depth archival research using the documenta archives and provides structural and practical support for fellows relocating to Kassel. The fellowship period runs from May to October 2026.
Selected fellows will be integrated into Kassel’s cultural and research environment while developing and presenting their research outcomes.
Rewards
- €2,000 monthly stipend for six months (total €12,000)

Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be young international academics, artists, or curators engaged in research
- Not be based in Germany or in German-speaking countries
- Have excellent knowledge of modern and contemporary art
- Demonstrate experience with archival research
- Show prior accomplishments in scholarly, artistic, or curatorial research
- Be willing to reside in Kassel for the full fellowship period (May–October 2026)
- Demonstrate knowledge of German, ideally at C1 level
