About this opportunity
The Afritondo Short Story Prize is seeking Black and African writers to submit original short fiction exploring the theme “Transition,” celebrating fresh perspectives and imaginative storytelling. Each year, the prize focuses on a specific theme and invites submissions that showcase creative storytelling and new perspectives. For 2026, the theme is “Transition”, encompassing stories of change, becoming, rupture, and renewal.
Rewards
- $1,000 to the winner
- $100 each to four finalists
- Longlisted stories may be included in the Afritondo anthology for publication
Eligibility
- Must be a citizen or national of an African country, or have at least one African parent, or identify as Black/part of a Black minority population worldwide.
- Writers must be 18 or older.
- Stories must be unpublished and not submitted to other prizes.
- Stories must be in English, 3,000–5,000 words, and submitted in Microsoft Word format (doc/docx) following formatting guidelines.
