About this opportunity
The Commonwealth Short Story Prize 2026 is open for submissions from 1 September to 1 November 2025. Administered and funded by the Commonwealth Foundation, the prize celebrates the best new short fiction (2,000–5,000 words) from across the Commonwealth. Stories may be submitted in English or in select languages with or without translation. Five regional winners will be selected, and one of them will go on to be named the overall prizewinner. Winning stories will be published online by Granta and promoted internationally.
Rewards
£5,000 for the overall winner + £2,500 for each regional winner + publication in Granta
If the winning short story is a translation into English, the translator will receive an additional prize of £750.
Eligibility
Open to any citizen (writers) of a Commonwealth country aged 18 and over. Please see the full list of Commonwealth countries here.
